I remember sitting and staring at the phone. This was when there were still landlines, mind you. (No, I'm not a T-Rex.)
I would sit there, and repeat in my head over and over how I wanted the intake to go.
My stomach would CHURN. I mean, lower stomach churning. (I know... I said it...)
I'd practice how to ask questions.
I'd practice how to say my fee.
I'd practice how to offer my schedule.
And then... I'd call. Guess what I would do?
I would say just fine: "I charge $120 a session" but then I would add "but I have a sliding scale for folks who need it."
Seriously. Who doesn't think they need a sliding scale. I once had a guy ask for my sliding scale and I said "yes" because he was unemployed. Well, months later I discover he was an unemployed MILLIONAIRE. (I shit you not.)
I would say just fine: "I have Tuesday at 5pm and Wednesday at noon open" but then I would add "but I also could do Tuesday at 6pm if that doesn't work and I can probably make Wednesday at 5pm work if I need to."
And what would I get? A really lovely client who was paying sliding scale and coming three hours after I planned on being home.
Do you know what I needed? I needed someone to sit down with me, and say, "Here new therapist Sarah" (okay, actually that sounds condescending... maybe:) "Here, Sarah, are the words that I use when I call a client. Try them out, and then if you don't like them, adjust. But try them a couple times just to see."
New therapist Sarah could have really used that! It would have felt so relieving!
I can't help her... she's a lost cause... but I can help you. So with the help of Natalia Amari, the fiesty femme herself, we developed scripts you can use with your clients to help you stay on track and get clear with what you are offering.
We also think that working gets boring, so we decided that after we get shit done and work on kicking scheduling's butt and devising you the perfectest schedule ever, we should play!
