Fresh out of grad school, I heard from several of my mentors that I needed to network if I wanted to be successful in private practice. So when I got my first invitation to an open house networking party a few months later, you better believe I headed straight to some expensive boutique shop where I spent both way too much time and money on what I thought was the perfect “professional” networking outfit. Then I strutted home where I spent even more time and effort towards getting ready and studying up on private practice blog posts about networking (I wouldn’t hold it past memorizing a few scripts or two in there either...) because I wanted to appear like the image of who I thought I needed to be.
Looking back, I was absolutely terrified in those moments but I didn’t really know it at the time. I really thought that “that’s just what you do”. (Noticing my cognitive distortions much?) I just want to hug that scared little therapist intern when I think about it and tell her that she needs to run far, far away from all networking events so I could save her from the shame storm she ended up getting sucked up into for weeks to come. Whew... Even thinking about that memory to this day brings up feelings of embarrassment, vulnerability and sadness. I don’t wish that on anyone! Nobody needs to feel like they don’t belong or need to be someone else… even when it comes to networking.
Alyssa and I talk about this topic all the time. Literally - we laugh about it when we’re together now because I think it might honestly be the one topic we discuss every single time we’re together. My guess is that it’s become both therapeutic to laugh about it in retrospect but also, because we really value each other’s support and our own networking tribes we’ve worked hard to build. We’ve also learned the importance of authenticity, storytelling and how using your own unique personality traits can tell you more about networking than any blog post or big event ever will. Believe me, we’re far from perfect and are always constantly learning. We’ve also made enough mistakes and embarrassing moments to last a lifetime’s worth of therapist networking events and we want to help you prevent making some of those same mistakes.
Our course will be more of a discussion with each other on how to be our authentic selves when networking and will be accompanied by treats and tea because… who doesn’t feel warm and toasty inside when they have tea? We’ll be working through several soulful journal prompts together and you’ll leave feeling more empowered to start networking to get the client you want!
